Books available on the subject of the market town of Hitchin

There are several books available on the subject of Hitchin, a market town in
North Herfordshire, England. A number of books about Hitchin are now out of
print, but can be found at some of the online book retailers. One quite recent
book on Hitchin is Francis Frith's Hitchin (Town & City Memories) by Francis
Frith and Simon Walker, which was published in 2005. It contains around 75
detailed period photographs from the archive of Francis Frith which have
extended captions and full introduction. This book is suitable for tourists, local
historians and general readers.

Another book about Hitchin that I really like is: Hitchin: Portrait of an English
Market Town from the Cameras of T.B.Latchmore and Others by Helen Poole and
Alan Fleck. It contains 128 pages and available both new and used from Amazon.

There are several books about old Hitchin, including many with photographs of
Old Hitchin. You can investigate 400,000 years of local history in 40 pages thanks
to a new book by Keith Fitzpatrick-Matthews and his partner Tony.

Keith, the archaeologist for North Herts District Council, believe the book The
Archaeology of Hitchin from Pre-History to the Present
will open people’s eyes
to things they didn’t realise about the town of Hitchin.

”I’m hoping it will contain a few surprises,” he said. “We have got information
that hasn’t been published in the past, that has been overlooked."

“It starts in the Old Stone Age with the hand axes discovered in the 19th Century
and goes right through to buildings put up in the last couple of years and tries
to look forward to the future. There are lots of history books on Hitchin but not
about the archaeology.”

Items include the discovery of a Saxon ditch built in Paynes Park behind the Market
Place and the original Saxon layout of St Mary’s Church, which is older than was
reviously thought.

The pictures have been taken by Tony Fitzpatrick-Matthews and the book, which costs £4.95, has been published by NHDC and Hitchin Historical Society. It will be available at all the usual outlets including Hitchin Museum, Waterstone’s, Eric Moore’s, David’s Bookshop and Waitrose.

Books about old Hitchin can be bought from online retailers, including many with photographs of Old Hitchin.
